Project Description

A fresh chapter begins for this one-of-a-pair Edwardian weatherboard in Brunswick – thoughtfully reimagined as a long term home for a growing family.

The project called for a careful balance between the old and new – gently unpicking a series of well-intentioned but questionable DIY renovations by prior owners, whilst restoring and celebrating the home’s remaining heritage character. Original details were retained and enhanced where possible, providing a sense of continuity that grounds the new work.

Internally, the house has been transformed into a light-filled and highly functional family home. A ground floor extension and first floor addition create generous, flexible spaces for a family of four (and a much-loved dog), with considered accommodation for grandparents who regularly visit and stay. The result is a home that supports everyday life with ease, while allowing for connection, retreat, and everything in between.

Beyond the walls, the “undoing” extended to the site itself. What was once a heavily paved and concreted garden, including a DIY layered internal slab – a tiramisu of concrete – was carefully removed to make way for the new extension and a more permeable landscape. In its place, greenery and open space now soften the site, improving amenity and reconnecting the home to the garden.

Testimonial

We got in touch with DE.ARCH through a friend’s recommendation and they have not disappointed. We retained them a couple of years ago for some renovation advice. Jess and the team have been incredibly patient on the journey with us while we have very slowly made our decisions, and at no point have they rushed us or given us any sense that they are not invested in getting an outcome. DE.ARCH bring exceptional insight to a home build, and are very thorough in what they do. They have a level of technical, financial and practical expertise that makes the process seamless for a busy family. In addition, their fee transparency is to be commended – we’ve always been clear on what we are being charged, and why. I’d highly recommend them!
