Murrumbeena
Project Description
The Murrumbeena Hideaway, a classic brick Californian Bungalow, has been thoughtfully reimagined into a two-story sanctuary that harmoniously balances functionality with tranquility. Designed to cater to the needs of a growing family, the home offers distinct spaces for both introspection and connection.
The original structure has been carefully preserved and restored where possible, with elements replaced in a style true to the home’s architectural heritage. The house features unique decorative brickwork and intricate detailing in the windows, doors, and ceilings, all of which were emphasized in the renovation. In contrast, the rear extension and second-story addition are sleek, modern, and minimal, creating a striking juxtaposition with the original design.
Inside, the atmosphere is warm and serene, with soft greys and sandy tones forming a neutral base, allowing the family to infuse their personal style into the space. Given the south-facing backyard, maximizing natural light was a priority, achieved through the inclusion of a large east-facing courtyard where day light is amplified as it adjoins a double-height dining area and circulation space for the first floor.
